Forklift Buying Tips
If you are thinking about buying a forklift for your business there are a few things you need to consider before making that decision.
New or Used Forklift?
First, are you going to buy a new or used forklift? Obviously purchasing a used model will save you money initially, however, this is not always the case as some used forklifts have been uncared for by previous owners and can wind up costing you a lot more in repair and maintenance. With this in mind, always check out how many hours have been logged on the forklift and if a history of maintenance is available, review it carefully.
Buying a used forklift can save your business money but if the forklift is riddled with problems you might as well buy new. There are a few minor questions you can ask to make sure that you are buying smart.
Depending on your business type, indoor or outdoor, it's best to buy a fuel efficient forklift. If you are working indoors an electric forklift will keep the air clean, if you spend most of time outside a propane powered forklift is just as economical. Also measure your dimensions; you don't want to buy one that cannot fit inside unless you house it outside.
If there is a forklift dealer in your area you can check out their inventory to see what is available. Buying new will give you a business advantage because you can depreciate the lift over time. New forklifts do cost more but if you need new then you should go that route. Buying new has its advantages and disadvantages. Some dealers also have forklift leasing options available, check into all options they offer.
Things You should consider when Buying a Forklift
Check out what kind of tyres are on the forklift. Pneumatic tyres won't go flat if you run over a nail or screw; they are also called cushion tires. Inflatable tyres should only be used on smooth surfaces, tire replacement is expensive and you will need to have a licensed mechanic come to your place of business to change them.
There are trader magazines that generally advertise used forklifts, find out as much information over the phone as you can. If you want to view the lift make sure they have all the warranty information and mechanics records available.
Another important aspect of buying a forklift is making sure that the people who operate it are trained to drive it. OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will require that all drivers be trained a certain number of hours, this is one of the most overlooked features of forklift safety.
Since there are several different types of forklifts ranging from small forklifts to 6,000 pound lifts. It depends on what kind of job you need it for. Explain to the company or person you are buying from so they know what you are in the market for, don't buy a lift that won't do the job or one that is too big for what you really need. Once you make your decision and purchase you should take care of your forklift with regular maintenance such as oil changes and lubrications.
