The Difference between Toxic Substances and Hazchem Goods

Toxic Substances, or Dangerous Goods, is a blanket term describing any substance that can cause harm to people, property or the environment because of its chemical, physical or biological makeup.

Dangerous goods are classified on the basis of immediate physical or chemical effects such as fire, explosion, corrosion and poisoning that may affect property, people or the environment (e.g. petrol, pool chlorine, and some pesticides).

Hazchem Goods are classified only on the basis of health effects - both medium and long term - particularly in relation to workplaces. Many materials are both dangerous goods and hazardous substances.

Toxic Substances

Toxic Substances include any chemical or mixture that may be harmful to the environment and to humans if inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through the skin.

Hazchem Sign

Hazchem Signs should be used on all vehicles transporting Dangerous Goods. A Hazchem Sign in South Africa needs to display the following information:

• The top-left section displays the EAC (Emergency Action Code) telling the emergency team how to deal with an incident pertaining to the Dangerous Goods Transporter
• The middle-left section gives the contact number for Operator Telephonic Advice
• The bottom-left section gives the contact number that should be called if specialist advice is needed
