An Overview of Types of Forklifts
Today you see forklifts in use all over the world for both industrial and business applications. They make the transportation of goods and materials faster and better than any manual labor, and are cheaper than hiring more workers. One experienced Forklift operator can do any job in half the time.
Forklifts come in several styles and models, but they all have the same basic components. You have a driver’s area, usually encased in some kind of roll cage. The steering is in the back, which makes it highly maneuverable in tight spots. It can have a variety of different fork designs, depending on its application. If you work in the lumber industry for example, you may find some forklifts that have pinching claws instead of forks, so lumber can be picked up and transported safely. The forks tilt, rise and depress so that it is able to carry loads in various positions.
Types of Forklifts
With this in mind there are different kinds of forklifts. For power sources, you have two choices, internal combustion, and electric forklifts. Usually, for saving money on fuel costs, many forklifts that use a combustion motor use propane as a fuel source. It is cheaper than gasoline, burns more efficiently and doesn't give off as many harmful gases. In some larger applications, forklifts may also be diesel powered. You also have a few specialty types of forklifts like Narrow Aisle Forklifts, which are commonly used for warehouses and bulk food stores. There is also rough terrain forklifts used in tougher outdoor situations.
If you are looking for an ideal unit for indoor use, electric forklifts are your best bet for two reasons. They have no exhaust emissions, and can be used indoors without ventilation. The only other type that can be used indoors is the propane model, but these still require some kind of venting. The second reason electric forklifts are widely used in indoor applications is that their operating costs are much lower than internal combustion forklifts, but their initial costs are going to be from 20-40% higher than combustion lifts.
Electric forklifts are quieter than other forklifts, and there is no need for fuel storage tanks. They have fewer moving parts, and since they are mostly used in an indoor setting which is much cleaner than some areas forklifts are used in, they tend to last longer overall. There are a few disadvantages of electric forklifts, one is that the batteries are much larger than any battery in a car, but work similarly. They are super heavy, and only last for one shift, usually about 5-6 hours of constant usage. They also not only take up to 8 hours to charge, you also have to wait an additional 8 hours for cool down before they can be put into use.
You can buy forklifts new and used. A brand new forklift can be expensive, and cost thousands of dollars. Some used ones you can find cheaper, but if you really need a good reliable unit, it is a good idea to buy one new, because a used one may have problems that you won't see until later.
