What You Need to Consider when You Rent a Truck

The Size of the Rental Truck

When you decide to hire a truck the size of the truck or van that you decide to rent is very significant. A rental truck or van that is too big will damage your possessions as goods have more room to roll around. Alternatively, a rental truck that is too small will minimize how much you can carry and possibly require multiple trips. The rule of thumb is to equate the size of your rental truck/van to the size of the load you intend it to carry.

To establish the correct size of the rental truck, ask for opinions from the consultants at truck rental agency of choice. If you are unsure, rather go with the bigger vehicle so you can at least fit all your equipment in the truck and complete the move in as few trips as possible.  Never underestimate parking availability and maneuverability.

How do I determine how long I need a rental truck for?

The truck rental company will want to know how long it will be in use and when the vehicle will be returned. Plan ahead and know how long it will take you to pack the truck, drive to the new location, unpack the truck and return it to the truck rental agency. While you are planning the length of time required to use the truck rental service, also think about how you are going to strategically pack the truck rental.  It is a good idea to ask the truck rental company what their policy is in terms of returning the rental truck.  You don't want to be in a position where being a few minutes late returning the truck results in an additional day’s rental fee.

Have all necessary documentation

On the day that you take delivery of the rental truck, review all your personal documentation and ensure that nothing is missing. Do this before you arrive at the truck rental company so that your rental can be organised without hassle.

Do you have the right license to operate the rental truck?

In South Africa one needs a Code 10 accredited drivers license to drive a vehicle that is exceeds 3500kg’s. Be sure that you are capable of driving the rental truck before you venture on to the public road.
